THE CONCEPT OF OSSEOINTEGRATION IN IMPLANTOLOGY
Abstract:
Branemark & Col were the first to suggest the possibility of a direct contact between the haversian bone and a loaded implant that they called “osseointegration”. The current definition of osseointegration is the “direct anatomical and functional junction between the reshuffled bone and the surface of the implant that was loaded.” In light of the clinical studies published by Branemark, the concepts of the nature of the bone-implant interface have evolved considerably. The interposition of a fibrous connective tissue represented the classical concept, but the excellent results published by the Swedish show that in case of a bone-implant direct contact, osseointegration is more viable on the long term.
