CORRELATIONS BETWEEN ULTRASOUND DIMENSIONS OF THE PROSTATE AND CLINICAL SYMPTOMATOLOGY
Abstract:
The current work aims to demonstrate the correlation between the ultrasound dimensions of
the prostate, volume and clinical symptoms achieved with the help of the International Prostate
Symptom Score (IPSS). The study was conducted on 197 patients over 40 years old who had nocturia.
The ultrasound diameters were measured: antero-posterior, cranio-caudal and transversal and then,
the volume of the prostate was calculated. For the assessment of the benign prostatic hyperplasia
(BPH) symptoms, I focused on the IPSS, because it is the most frequently used instrument. The most
frequently affected age group was concluded to be between 60-69 years (44.7%) The majority of
patients fall into grade II regarding the IPSS score, and the frequency of nocturia is 1-3 times. The
increase in prostate volume leads to an increase in clinical symptoms, especially nocturia, an increase
in IPSS and a decrease in quality of life of patients.
