THE SEIPS (SYSTEMS ENGINEERING INITIATIVE FOR PATIENT SAFETY) MODELL, A USEFULL TOOLL FOR MANAGING THE PATIENT SAFETY IN A SURGERY DEPARTMENT
Abstract:
The Systems Engineering Initiative for Patient Safety, or SIEPS, was developed in 2006 by Carayon and Smith (1). Another name for it is " the work system model" and can be used to solve systemic safety issues in the healthcare system. The SEIPS model presents a framework for understanding health care structures, processes and outcomes and the relationships between them. In order to improve the outcomes, this system is using an "industrial, technical" approach to the processes involved. In this case, the errors are not the simple results of some individuals actions, but faulty interactions between systems. A better understanding of this interractions will lead to a decrease of errors, and a better quality of care and increased patient safety.
